No. Just come dressed in athletic clothing and running shoes. Event-specific spikes are not required to start the season.
We do recommend visiting Sole Sports to get properly fitted for running shoes. The Tempe location offers a 20% discount for DV athletes. Let them know you are with Desert Vista.
Bring a water bottle every day and make sure your name is clearly written on it. We strongly recommend writing your name on everything you bring to practice.
Practices are after school and typically run until about 5:30 to 6:00 pm, depending on the training group. Most weeks include either a meet or a practice on Saturdays.
Absolutely not. Track and field at Desert Vista is for everyone. We will teach you what you need to know and help you progress at your own pace.
Yes. It is never too late to try something new. Many athletes start track later in high school and have very successful seasons.
Reach out to one of the track coaches and let us know when your winter season ends. We will help create a plan for a smooth transition into track once you are finished.
No. Track and field does not have tryouts.
Pre-season training is strongly recommended but not required. It helps athletes build fitness before the season officially begins and significantly reduces the risk of injury.
The track and field season starts on February 7, and meets begin in late February. Because the season moves quickly, pre-season training gives athletes a head start and allows them to be better prepared when competition begins.
How do I know what event group I will be in?
Coaches will help place athletes in event groups based on interest, ability, and team needs. Many athletes try multiple events early in the season.
Do I have to know my event right away?
No. It is very common for athletes to explore different events at the beginning of the season before settling into a primary focus.
What if I miss a practice?
Communication is important. Athletes should communicate with their event coach as soon as possible if they need to miss practice due to illness or another excused reason that has been discussed with their coach and approved prior to practice.
Missing practice for work is not an acceptable reason. If an athlete needs tutoring or to make up a test, those should be scheduled in the mornings whenever possible so that practice is not missed.
Is track and field a cut sport?
No. Track and field is inclusive, and athletes of all abilities are welcome to participate.
What should I expect at the first week of practice?
The first week focuses on learning routines, building a fitness base, reviewing safety expectations, and helping athletes ease into training.
